Charles J. Neilson,
MD
Medical Control Center Director/Clinical Risk Manager
In
early 2000, Dr. Neilson assumed a leadership role as the Medical Director
of a highly technical and innovative telemedicine operation with Emtel,
Inc. that linked supervising urban emergency physicians via a continuous
audio-visual connection with highly trained emergency nurse practitioners
on-site at several rural emergency rooms throughout Texas. For over
four years, this successful operation surpassed all expectations for
providing high quality and competent emergency care for over 84,000
patients in isolated rural hospitals. Patient satisfaction as well as
overall confidence in this operation by on-site local hospital staff
physicians and the remotely-situated emergency physician providers was
also surprisingly optimal.
As
Medical Director of the Medical Control Center, which put a fully dedicated
and scheduled emergency physician in contact with up to five rural emergency
rooms simultaneously, Dr Neilson developed a comprehensive telemedicine
Guidebook which addressed various potential pitfalls and protocols designed
to maintain excellence in this new approach to healthcare. Dr Neilson’s
experience with both family medicine and emergency medicine, coupled
with his supervision and direction of a successful innovative emergency
telemedicine operation, allows him to contribute to the development
of future telemedicine ventures.
